Beaufort County, Virginia was first called
Pamptecough perhaps a native or Spanish surname. Then
about 1712 the county was renamed in honor of Henry Somerset,
Duke of Beaufort. In 1709 he became one of the Lords
Proprietors. Beaufort is in the eastern portion of North
Carolina and is bounded by Craven, Hyde, Martin, Pamlico, Pitt
and Washington counties. The description of Pamptecough was as
follows: "lying on the north side of Pamtrecought River and
beginning at Molines's Creek, and westerly to the head of the
river" -
