My Grand Father was Calaway Clinton Collins, born about 1877, in Hancock County, TN. He married Elizabeth Collins in about 1899.
My Great Grandfather was Wheeler Collins who was married to Loucinda Collins.
They are descendents of Solomon and Ginice Goins.

In doing research for a paper for my cultures class. i have associated my heritage to the melungeon culture of Appalacia. I was born in Knott County, Sassafras, KY. My maiden name is Beverly. I am kin to the Mullins and Gibsons. Those are all Melungeon surnames.

Almost all of husbands maternal line is named here (Wampler, White, Adkins, Coleman, Ramey, Hunt, Smith). Mother-in-law was a White.
She said they were Cherokee but I could never find any proof of that. They all come from Tazewell/Logan/Dickenson Co's in WV/VA and Pike Co. in KY.
I look forward to reading more. Thanks!

I believe my Fields family in Eastern KY may trace Thomas Field from Jamestown, as John Field shows up in Varina Parish in the late 1600s, living on Thomas Field Sr land. These Fields used the same first names alot, and my John Fields lived in along side the Newmans Ridge Melungeons in the late 1700s, and was married to Polly Gibson Madden. They moved to Perry County KY in the early 1800s. This John was also a Longhunter. There is no doubt my family has Tri Racial ties, on both sides of my family.
I also have ties to Begley, Shepherd, Jones, and Brays..If you have any info on the later mentioned families, i would appreciate it!

I want to contact Paty who was related to Jennie (McCarroll) Whetsell (spelling?) my family seems to have Melungeon beginnings which brought me to this site. My Dad asked me "Am I Indian?" He knew I was doing genealogy. I could not answer him. Some people look at his Dads picture and see Choctaw but my Dad and his Dad were very dark featured. I have a Huge book of McCarroll genealogy I want to share. Thank you, Erika

My family is from the Staunton/Buffalo Gap area of Virginia. We had an ancestor with th last name Moore and I know that one of my great grandmothers was an Indian named Osceola. I just learned of the Melungeons today 9/9/11 and I would like to learn more.
Mike Fields Thursday, October 6, 2011 06:15
The Moore family was very closely alligned with my Fields family for years, in Virginia. You look alot like my Fields cousins also. You and I even have some of the same features..Some of the Fields and Moores married. Also, the Jones is married into my dads Shepherd family.

There's a name that should be added to your list of Virginia Indian traders. Christopher and Emanuel Choate were Indian traders married to Cherokee wives. They lived in what is now eastern Tennessee. Emanuel signed the petition for the Watauga Confederacy.

My Lumbee ancestry is not mentioned in your list. John B Hamman (various spellings) was a Lumbee from N Carolina. John Lemuel Israel and Joseph Butler Birdsong are also not mentioned.

Very impressed with your site. I was looking at the Lumbee Indian listing for the 1790 NC census. Curious as to how all those people were confirmed or recognized to be Lumbee. Is this data from other censuses? I don't recall ever seeing a listing as Lumbee. How can I confirm a specific individual? Very excited about the info you provide.

Being raised in Morristown, TN I often heard of the Malungean tribe and their mysterious existance. Have always known of my father's cherokee/choctaw bloodlines but never dreamed I would see his eyes again. After researching this information further I find he may be a direct descendant of the brothers Joseph & William Cooper - longhunters. I hope to attend a union at some point, but intend to have DNA make-up on myself and my son. He was from South Georgia but amazing his life brought him back to the land of his ancestors w/out his knowledge. Life will put you on a remarkable journey whether you are aware of it or not!!! Possible connection through a Stroud/Joyner line in Isle of Wight, VA. As far as the origin of the term Melungeon; I know that among older Italian residents of the Pittsburgh, PA area the word for eggplant (melanzane), a homophone of the word Melungeon, is a pejorative term for black people. The most common variant of eggplant (aubergine) has a very dark purple, almost black, skin.
