Who or what are the Melungeons? If
you could prove the answer to that question, a lot of people
would be interested. There exist
famous people whose roots are tied to Melungeons, Elvis
Presley and one of the American presidents Abraham
Lincoln are such examples. First discovered in
1654 living in the Appalachian Mountains,
Melungeons’ roots is a highly controversial subject.
One of the theories about the roots of the Melungeons is to be
brought to the American continent by the Spanish sailors around
1500’s and to lie in Caucasia, the Mediterranean region and to
Anatolia. In other words, they are people of a geography where
the Ottoman Empire reigned. And first time ever,
Melungeons are visiting New York City by the organization of
University of Istanbul Alumni Association-USA.
